Simple prayer

Sometimes we over-complicate our prayers. We talk a certain way, repeat certain words, and say certain phrases that we would never normally say. There certainly is a place for reverence and awe within prayer, but there’s also something to be said about familiarity with the Lord. After all, Hebrews 4:16 says to approach Him with confidence.

In addition to making prayer a priority in my personal life, we try to stress it at home with our girls too. Our 1-year old, Adalyn, loves to hold hands and yell her version of “Amen” when the prayer is over. My 4-year old, Emery, is really starting to get it. I’ve mentioned some of her prayer before, and many times, they’re pretty funny, but recently she said a simple prayer that I can’t get out of my mind.

As a family, we held hands around the dinner table, and she said,

“Dear God, we love You and we love the way You love us. Amen.”

So simple, and yet so profound. She said so much by saying so little. Think about how God loves us. Don’t you love how He loves us?

Now I’m not trying to say that we should aim for 14-word prayers, but what I am saying is that we should stop turning prayer into something that it’s not.

Prayer is NOT a place to act holy.

Prayer is NOT a place to try to impress (others or God).

Prayer is NOT a place to be who you’re not or who you wish you were.

Prayer IS a place to be genuine.

Prayer IS a place to be who you really are.

Prayer IS a place to cry, worship, rejoice, repent, and lay it all out on the table.

Simplify your prayer today. Tell God what’s up. He already knows – you won’t surprise Him. But I know He’d love to hear.
