Hell: NO?

Last month, the debate in Christian (and even secular) circles was about the reality of hell. TIME magazine even ran a front page news article entitled “What If There’s No HELL?” based on Rob Bell’s new controversial book, Love Wins. I haven’t read the book and I won’t get into the argument about it, but according to TIME’s article and many reviews I’ve read, the book claims that everyone “could have a place in heaven, whatever that turns out to be.” It’s scary (yet not surprising) to realize that this is being taught in churches!

On the other end of the spectrum is the backlash from the news heard ’round the world from President Obama that US forces had found and killed Osama bin Laden. When death hits, people begin to wonder what’s next. Suddenly, although last month’s debate seemed to rid the idea of hell from some people’s minds, hell was back. According to a CNN & Opinion Research Corporation poll of 700 Americans released Tuesday, 61% of the public says yes, Bin Laden is now in hell!

People love justice when it’s not being dished out on them.

Satan has a very unique strategy. Whereas many people who want to conquer and defeat the enemy do so by bolstering a huge uprising of people and gaining public recognition, Satan is the opposite. He wins by disappearing.

Satan works similar to Carbon Monoxide, the silent killer. Carbon Monoxide kills 170 people in the US every year. Why? Because it’s colorless and odorless – people don’t even know it’s a threat. Because many people are not aware of the threat and therefore not equipped to detect it, they die quietly in their homes.

That’s part of Satan’s strategy. He loves when people stop believing in him and in hell – it takes away the threat. If those are just figments of our imagination or something made up to make children behave, then what are we worried about?

So what is it for you: Hell: YES or Hell: NO?

Almost every New Testament author speaks of hell and Jesus said more about it than anyone else in the New Testament. He talks about hell because He doesn’t want anyone to go there. So, be aware and be on the lookout for Satan’s strategies all around you.

  1. You really should read the book, and not articles about it. I’ve read it, and Bell most definitely, in his chapter entitled Hell, says hell exists. The media just hypes the book up to something it’s not in order to make it a more appealing story.
