Bible in 90 Days 31: OBADIAH

Today is Day 69 in our journey through the Bible in 90 days.

Obadiah was the shortest book yet – only 1 chapter…and yet, like normal, there’s plenty to learn from even 1 chapter.

Although the previous prophet, Amos, was a prophet to Israel, we now jump back to a nation that neighbored Judah, Edom.

Obadiah’s main message is targeted at Edom. Their problem was everyone’s main problem: pride. “The pride of your heart has deceived you…” – Obadiah 3

Edom felt like they were so secure in the mountains and cliffs that surrounded them that they didn’t need God. Boy were they wrong. God warns them of the wrath that is coming…

For the day of the Lord is near upon all the nations. A you have done, it shall be done to you… – Obadiah 15

One main thing that sets Obadiah’s prophecy apart from many of the others is that he doesn’t offer Edom a chance for repentance. They have used up their chances and God no longer offers it. Did God run out of mercy? No. However, the time comes, after God has freely offered it, that He has to follow through on what He has warned will happen: judgment.

When I was growing up, my dad used to use a phrase that reminded me of how serious he was. When I would get in trouble and he would warn me of the consequences if I did it again, he would sometimes say, “Son, I don’t make threats; I make promises.” Chilling. I knew he meant business

The same is the case with God. He means business. The book of Obadiah serves as a solemn reminder to us that God isn’t messing around. Pride was the original sin that got Satan thrown out of heaven, and it infiltrates our lives and culture today. NOW is the time to rid yourself of the plague of pride. Humble yourself before it’s too late.

Next up: the prophet on the run – Jonah!
