God’s Will For Your Sex Life

In the weeks leading up to VIVID, each Thursday has been dedicated to something along the topic of sexuality. Here’s what we’ve covered so far:

Continuing on the topic of sexuality, let’s get some thoughts on what God’s plan is for relationships and sex…

There are many gray areas when it comes to God’s will for your life.

“Should I go to college?”

“What should I be when I grow up?” (I know adults who are still asking that!)

“Is this job my career or my calling?”

“Who should I marry?”

“Paper or plastic?”

God’s will for our lives is revealed in two main ways: general and specific.

Unless I really know you it’s going to be very hard for me to tell you God’s specific will for your life, and even then that’s not really information I’m privy to. (Just because I’m a pastor doesn’t mean God tells me secrets He won’t tell you!) God’s specific will for your life will involve your unique spiritual gifts, placement, lifestyle, sphere of influence, and more.

I may not be able to say much about His specific will for your life, but I can tell you His general will for all of us. There is a lot I can say on this topic, but I’ll hone in on three specific things the Bible says, then drill deeper into one of them.

There are only three things the Bible specifically states are God’s will for our lives:

Gratitudegive thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. – 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (ESV)

IntegrityFor this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people. – 1 Peter 2:15 (ESV)

PurityFor this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; – 1 Thessalonians 4:3 (ESV)

Let’s hone in on purity. Thankfully there are no gray areas when it comes to our sexual purity. It is God’s will for you to live a sexually pure life. Period. Here are a couple things to keep in mind about that…

God’s commandment is your enablement.

If sexual purity sounds impossible and/or out of reach, take heart. God won’t command something that He won’t also enable you to live out. (tweet this) It’s not something you can pull off on your own, but with His help and His people, we can accomplish the impossible.

Sexual sin is self-sin.

Paul says in 1 Corinthians that when we commit sexual sin, we sin against our own bodies. It’s a bigger deal than you may think. Sexual sin is a sin against God, against your spouse or future spouse, and even against yourself. Sexual sin, like all other categories of sin, is never a victimless crime.

Don’t attack the behavior. Let God change your heart.

Trying to make yourself better by stopping a habit or simply changing an action is akin to taking Ibuprofen to deal with the throat pain from your pneumonia. It may cause you to think you’re healing and making progress, but the symptoms will return momentarily until the core issue is dealt with.

God doesn’t want to kill your joy; He wants to increase it.

God is not a cosmic killjoy, as many think He is. He is actually the Author of joy and He designed our bodies to feel pleasure – sexually and non-sexually. Why would He create us with the capacity to experience something, then tell us not to experience it? God understands better than any of us that sex is powerful, and like a fire that needs to remain in the fireplace, sex has necessary boundaries as well. It’s for your good.

Purpose and power are tied directly to sexual purity. It’s worth the sacrifice, bother before and during marriage, to honor God with your relationships and romance.
